Summary
We know from Eliyahu Goldratt's The Goal that (1) no supply chain can work more rapidly than its capacity-constraining resource and (2) it is not possible to run a balanced factory at 100 percent capacity due to variation in processing and material transfer times. Henry Ford claimed, however, to have done exactly that! “The idea is that a man must not be hurried in his work—he must have every second necessary but not a single unnecessary second.” The only way he could have achieved this was to remove all the variation. A vital takeaway is that variation (in processing and material transfer times) is an assignable cause and thus removable from the supply chain, as opposed to something we have to live with.
